This plant is one of the first to emerge after winter. It can be used as a substitute for sugar and has a sweet aniseed flavour. Add chopped leaves into salads, dressings, omelettes, soups and stews. Try adding the leaves to boiling water when cooking cabbage or cooking fruit, such as blackcurrants, plums, rhubarb or gooseberries.
Plant in fertile, rich, well-drained soil in full sun/part shade.
